ABOUT THE course
This is a Guide Level Course for experienced professional rock climbing guides.
Providing training in guiding techniques on multi pitch terrain.
Increase your skill set and guide multiple clients on longer more committing and complicated multi pitch routes.
Maximize your clients experience while effectively managing risk through non-technical and technical terrain with up to 3 clients.
Please come prepared for extensive time on the rock in multi pitch terrain.
Aspiring or professional guides will learn a variety of technical skills and knowledge to safeguard multiple clients on technical approaches, route finding, rope and gear management issues, technical descents and rescue techniques.
A PACI multi pitch certified guide will be required to demonstrate competencies in techniques necessary to guide up to 3 clients in multi pitch ascents, traversing pitches, multi pitch descents and rescue skills.
This course provides the essential guide skills required to become a climbing and abseiling guide in a multi pitch climbing environment.
The course teaches a variety of skills and systems in technical instruction, group instructional skills, delivering safety briefings and group management protocols and fitting clients personal protective equipment I.e. harnesses, helmets, climbing shoes and equipment.
The course focuses on technical climbing and guiding skills, common guide and briefing techniques, managing clients in a natural surfaces multi pitch cliff environment and pertinent rescue skills.

Day 1
Theory
As this training is for a qualification in a workplace trainees are required to complete the following assignments:-
SWMS – safe work method statement – Lead single pitch climbing and abseiling activities on natural surfaces
Risk assessment document – Lead multi pitch climbing activities on natural surfaces – Lead Climbing
Risk assessment document – Lead multi pitch Abseiling activities on natural surfaces
2 x Incident reporting
2 x Faulty equipment reporting
The theory training for these assignments is day 1 of the course
During this day we also mark the required course exams,
Exams are to be completed prior to the course
PACI membership applications and required photo ID’s
Submit digital copies of current first aid and CPR qualifications
Note:- Trainee’s will have 2 weeks to complete the written assignments after the last day of the course.
Day 2 – 3 Guide Multi Pitch Climbing – Simulated Environments
Prepare equipment and participants.
Assess characteristics, condition and capability of participants, as they present, and obtain informed consent.
Confirm participants have clothing and footwear appropriate for the activity and anticipated weather conditions.
Select and set up equipment to match participants and prevailing conditions; complete safety checks.
Check participants’ own equipment, if provided, and confirm it is in safe working condition.
Direct and assist participants to fit and adjust equipment; check comfort and safety of fit.
Explain planned objectives; communicate instructions and information about activity in a manner appropriate to
participants.
Encourage participants to ask questions and seek advice before and during session.
Inform participants of known and anticipated risks, safety procedures, safe behaviour, safe areas and boundaries.
Brief participants and demonstrate multi pitch lead climbing and belaying techniques for natural surfaces.
Advise participants of roles and responsibilities of activity leaders, and communication protocols to use during activity.
Demonstrate and explain correct techniques appropriate for the activity.
Check and confirm participant ability to use and control equipment before activity commencement.
Monitor participant performance and provide directions, encouragement and corrective instruction to improve
techniques.
Lead and supervise multi pitch, lead climbing activities on natural surfaces
Implement recreational instruction techniques to impart skills and knowledge for the activity.
Implement required modifications to activity, location or route to ensure participant engagement and comfort, and completion within timelines.
Facilitate effective group communication and interaction to maintain group control, engagement and safety.
Manage safety during multi pitch lead climbing activities on natural surfaces.
Monitor activity conditions and hazards, including signs of participant difficulty, to ensure safety and welfare.
Monitor participant behaviour and adherence to safety procedures, adjust level of supervision and assertively correct breaches, as required.
Respond immediately to adverse participant reactions and hazardous situations.
Respond to emergency situations according to organisational safety, emergency response and first aid procedures.
Complete ongoing risk assessments to minimise risk of injury to participants and others.
Amend activities if risk is unacceptable; cease activities when required.
Complete post activity responsibilities.
Debrief participants and encourage discussion on their technique and satisfaction with session.
Retrieve equipment, inspect for wear or breakage, tag faults and store in designated area.
Document any equipment faults and incidents including injuries and near misses.
Evaluate the activity through a team debrief and identify improvements for future activities.
Day 4 – Guide Multi pitch lead climbing and Abseiling – assessment phase
Trainees to perform skills alone and unaided
Collect Photos for SWMS document
Day 5 – Guide Multi pitch lead climbing and Abseiling – assessment phase
Trainees to perform skills alone and unaided
Collect Photos for SWMS document
When competency has been achieved trainees will finalise assessment verification documents and learner questionnaires.
Successful Candidates will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment
SKILLS LEARNED
- Climbing techniques I.e. jamming, stemming, hands free rest
- Attachment into the harness with a secure and stable knot (F8 eye knot)
- Use of a personal safety lanyard
- Lead belaying techniques (single and double ropes)
- Rope management at the belay station
- Removal of traditional protection with a nut tool on a lanyard
- Descending and bailout techniques from a multi pitch route
